Attention Members

At the Prince George’s County Board of Education meeting on January 5, 2012, the Board approved revisions to the proposed 2012-13 School Year Budget that includes the elimination of 113 of our bargaining unit positions. Unlike in previous year reductions, most of these positions are occupied. As in previous years, your Union officials will work with the Administration and make every effort to minimize the impact of reductions on our members.

At the same meeting, the Board approved a “Retirement Incentive Program” that, for employees eligible for a normal service retirement from the Maryland State Retirement System (MSRS), for approved applicants, a retirement incentive of 20% of annual salary up to $20,000. Midnight, February 12, 2012 is the application deadline. See the PGCPS website for details and the application.

We have also been informed by the Administration that they are already in the process of filling any cleaner vacancies (caused by resignations, retirements, etc.) with temporary employees so that the number of current permanent employees who may have to be RIF’ed at the end of the year will be reduced. The Administration indicates that they want to try to accommodate as many RIFs as possible through attrition, rather than through actual separation of current employees.

Additional information will be given to you at the February General Membership Meeting
